Great Lakes Land Gatherings
Bringing people together to share personal experiences of Great Lakes lands and places.
These gatherings bring people together to talk, create, and imagine new relationships to the lands and places of the Great Lakes basin. In this region, diverse place histories and massive geographic scale come together in a uniquely cohesive identity. The basin offers a remarkable opportunity to bring land into conversation - land that is currently undergoing great change. As basin inhabitants, we know these dynamics well.
In this project we draw on our connections with individuals, communities, and institutions in the US and Canada to collaboratively develop and hold a series of in-person gatherings around the Great Lakes. Beginning in Fall 2026, we will travel between urban and rural, among different communities, and across state and national borders, sharing storytelling and creative activities that explore peoples’ connections to land and the living world. At each gathering, participants will contribute to a map, which will accumulate over time into a collective portrait of the basin.
With this project, we will articulate connections between peoples’ everyday lives, regional identities, and massive environmental circumstances. We will lay the groundwork for continued building of land-centered conversations among Great Lakes communities. Above all, we will enhance peoples’ appreciation and potential stewardship for their places, waters, and living worlds.
